G. Suspension for Unexpectedly Replaced Players in Two Dayers up to 4 Saturdays (Reg 23.2)

WHAT'S THIS ABOUT?

Suspension for injured players replaced through the unexpected circumstances replacement procedure to be extended from 3 Saturday's to 4.

DISCUSSION

Modify Reg 23.2 Replacement of ill/injured player conditions to suspend for F-O-U-R Saturdays not 3.

The change to regulations is straightforward enough.

The issue of why this change is to be made is hard to explain.

Three Saturdays was originally decided on since that meant any replacement applied for in the week following day 1 of a match would then suspend the injured player for  day 2 of the same match and both days of any following 2 dayer. They would be free to play from the date of the Sunday following that 3rd Saturday. The injured (recovered?) player can play in the next following Saturday two dayer.

Four Saturdays would mean that the injured player can become a Day 2 Replacement for the next following Saturday 2 dayer. This is a greater sit out period and presumably would provide a greater disincentive to those choosing to skip a day for less than genuine reasons.

Specifically:

  • R4 day 1 Sat 1-Oct player is named in starting team.
  • Th 6-Oct due to injury/illness, application for replacement made and approved under Reg 23.2
  • R4 day 2 Sat 8-Oct, injured player suspension Saturday 1 of 4 (Replacement plays instead)
  • R5 day 1 Sat 15-Oct, injured player suspension Saturday 2 of 4
  • R5 day 2 Sat 22-Oct, injured player suspension Saturday 3 of 4
  • R6 day 1 Sat 29-Oct, injured player suspension Saturday 4 of 4, player may be named as Day 2 'slash' replacement for R6 day 2 in anticipation
  • Sunday 30-Oct, suspension has ended. Play in a Sunday QSDCA competition permitted.
  • R6 day 2 Sat 5-Nov, player may play as a Day 2 'slash' replacement
  • R7 day 1 Sat 12-Nov, player may play without further restriction

One Day matches (scheduled and unscheduled) and weekends without scheduled competition (e.g. Xmas) may make this more complicated.

More subtly, we're going to add a clause allowing the Management Committee (through cricketops) to vary the suspension for certain circumstances e.g. pandemics.

The fact is that COVID infections caused the overwhelming majority of Unexpected player replacements in the 2021/22 season. At an early stage a decision was taken to skip the COVID player suspension period so as to reduce the chances of multiple team forfeits. The practical problem with losing people to COVID in large numbers and having lots of people on suspension was that teams might struggle to find any players!

This added rule makes those decisions somewhat regulatorily justifiable

But this change also might lead to some argument/bargaining from some people who want to make claims and argue for special treatment. The procedure is already complex enough IMO and protracted debate will just make it harder to administer.

Expect a few more "no's".

  1. 4 weekends seems to much to me - would like to see it just say 3 weekends, which means they can't play the next 2 day game or any other games for those 3 weekends. These should be calendar weekends and not match weekends as this is about a player with an injury and we shouldn't be incentivising players to play whilst injured, there is a duty of care there. One complete 2 day game should be sufficient in my opinion
