WHAT’S THIS ABOUT?
Changing the bonus points in Super20 competition to Net Run Rate.
DISCUSSION
Something like half the points value in a Super20 match is down to bonus points.
In a typical game a score of 8/120 (20 overs) countered by 6/121 (18.2 overs) the winning team gets 4 match points and 2.41 bonus points. The losing team gets 2.1 bonus points.
In another game where the result is more one sided, a score of 3/180 (20 overs) countered by 10/54 (7.2 overs) the winning team gets 4 match points and 3.3 bonus points. The losing team gets 0.99 points.
I’m worried this has distorting effect on competition results.
The choices are to make bonus points worth less or to make match points worth more…. Or….
Net run rate has been used in the Sunday 50 Over competition for the last two seasons.
In the typical game above the winning team net run rate would be 6.6-6.0 = +0.6. The losing team gets -0.6 . In the one sided game above, the winning team net run rate would be 9-7.36 = +1.64. The losing team gets -1.64.
This reflects the result but does not significantly erode the value of the 4 points for the win.
These figures are added to the net run rate total for each team’s ladder. At the end of the regular rounds any teams on equal points will have their placing determined by their net run rate. There are some further ways to determine placings just in case these are needed.

34.3.1 A team’s net run rate is calculated by deducting from the average runs per over scored by that team throughout the competition, the average runs per over scored against that team throughout the competition. 34.3.2 If a team is all out in less than its full quota of overs, the calculation of its net run rate will be based on the full quota of overs to which it would have been entitled and not on the number of overs in which the team was dismissed. 34.3.3 In a match declared no result, net run rate does not apply. |
